The United Methodist Church is devoted to inspiring and equipping its members to be a diverse representation of Christ. This commitment is demonstrated through the General Commission on Religion and Race, which has been active in cities such as New York and Chicago. In these cities, the church has established neighborhoods in Lincoln Park and East Harlem. The “body as temple” concept is a fundamental message of protection and risk reduction.
However, for many churches, this concept is used to reinforce views that degrade homosexuality and same-sex behavior, thus weakening the effectiveness of prevention. Individual interviews with church leaders provide more intimate and detailed conversations than could be held in a group setting. This type of sample allows us to explore the ideologies of churches that have the potential to become active participants in the fight against HIV among black MSM. Black churches in New York have a history of participating in community mobilization; however, research suggests that churches play a role in promoting stigma against black MSM, impeding prevention efforts.
Most of the churches included in the study were involved at some level in HIV prevention or other HIV-related initiatives. The YBIT ideology is useful for mobilizing around health problems and risk reduction. In recent years, researchers have documented efforts to prevent HIV, educate, and reduce stigma in churches and religious communities. The YLPs of New York occupy the First Spanish United Methodist Church in East Harlem and turn it into the People's Church for 11 days. During this time, they offer public services such as free breakfast programs, educational workshops, and health services to low-income residents. This work suggests that there is a unique relationship between culture and theology in many black churches.
